The Faculty of Computer Science & Engineering administers a Central Processing Unit (CPU) Room that is the backbone of all our computing resources and connectivity to the outer world. It has a number of high-speed server-class machines and equipment including
- Dell Dual Core Intel Xeon Server (Power Edge 2900 System)
- Sun Enterprise server and Ultra
- SGI Origin 200
- Cyclade board Cisco routers
- Layer-3 Switches
- High Performance computing cluster
All these servers and equipment run on 24/7 basis and are backed up with un-interrupted power supplies.
- Facilities currently provided by CPU Room include
- Internet sharing between different faculties, hosted by well known oper source proxy server Squid.
- E-Mail services to all students/staff/faculty of GIKI. Currenlty Online Directory services are not available.
- FYP Students/staff/faculty can avail respository of software via our software servers.
- CPU Room hosts the website that you are currently viewing. The site is hosted on an Intel Core2Quad machine running Apache webserver. This webserver is also maintaining the development structure of the website. The whole development process is automated via Macromedia Contribute Pubilshing servces. Account management for the Publishing Service is maintained by Webteam.
- A Firewall maintains a barrier between student and faculty resources, to ensure that students do not have access to classified academic records. Furthermore, Firewalls are also maintained on all systems currently connected via Internet IPs to avoid any possible hacker attacks.

Unifying Proxy Servers:
The aim of the project is to remove simultaneously running proxy servers and merge them into one. The reasons for doing so is to optimize processor utilizations for the individual servers. Although SQUID Proxy Server is not known to be CPU Intensive, but with over 800 internel clients and 2 Internet service providers, even SQUID has started to show its bad side.
