The academic year consists of two regular semesters; the Fall semester, of 16 weeks, starting roughly in the last week of August and ending in the last week of December, and the Spring semester, of 16 weeks, starting in the first week of January and ending in the last week of May. - How does the semester system compare to the annual system?
The semester system is quite different from the Annual system, both in terms of grading policy and the way material is presented for consumption. A week is a unit of the semester system. Unlike the annual system, where the final examination is the only test of the learning throughout the year, every assignment, quiz, mid term counts towards determining your grade in the semester system. The final examination is still the largest single contributor to the course distribution, but not the only one. In this way, you have to be on your toes throughout the semester in order to get a good grade. Semester system is tougher than the annual system. For the students coming from the FSc background, it is sometimes a bit difficult to get used to it.
- Can I get my faculty transferred after I get to the institute?
Only the top two students from each faculty, at the end of the Freshman year (second semester), are eligible for change of faculty.

There is no uniform for the students. But the students are expected to maintain a decent dress code.
- Is there any excessive academic pressure at GIKI?
Academic pressure is always there at this level of education as the student undergoes a major shift in exposure. But in GIKI, a word or two is due about the academic pressure here. The grading system in GIK Institute is rather tough, so most of the students are in for a few surprises when they come here. Added to it is the fierce competition in GIKI. But this pressure builds you up, and can be a great source of inspiration for working hard.
- Which courses are offered during summer semester?
Summer semester is basically an opportunity for those students who want to repeat the courses they have failed or they have a choice to improve their grades (incase they have a D, D+ or an F). As a matter of rule, any course can be offered in the summers if there are at least 10 students willing to take the said course, and there is an instructor who is willing to teach the course. You have to pay an additional Rs.6000 per credit hour in the summers.
