  • What extra curricular activities can I pursue in GIK Institute?
    GIKI is rich in chances for pursuing extra curricular activities. Societies like the LDS, CDES and ACM, Media Club, IEE, ASME, AIAA, IEEE, NETRONIX, Naqsh, WebTeam, Horizon, TMS, SPIE, Adventure Club, GCC, Sports Society, GEAS, Science Society etc. provide opportunities of varying nature. Apart from student societies, one can also participate in sport activities and various intra-GIKI and all-Pakistan competitions held at the institute.

  • What kind of a room/accommodation will I get?
    Freshmen will be allotted a room in the shared hostel and will share accommodation with one other student. At the end of the first year, majority of the students will be allotted single rooms in the solitary accommodation hostels. The rooms in the hostels are equipped with modern furniture and attached bathroom. The furniture consists of wall to wall carpeting, a study table, a computer table, a bed with a mattress and pillow, one relaxing chair, a study chair, a side table, a shelf, and a wall cupboard.

 

  • What sports facilities are there?
    Sports complex is located in close proximity of the Boys Hostels. It consists of a completely covered swimming pool of international standard with comprehensive facilities, three standard squash courts, a billiards room and a Gymnasium. The Gymnasium includes an exercise room and a main hall. Main Hall houses the facilities to play basketball, volleyball and badminton on make shift basis. For outdoor sports tennis, basketball, and volleyball courts, hockey and football grounds, and a cricket field are available.

 

  • Is there a swimming pool in GIK Institute?
    Yes, there is an indoor swimming pool of international standard in the institute.

 

  • Which journals/magazines can I get from the library?
    Reader’s Digest, Newsweek, Times, PC magazine, Spider, Popular Science and Mechanics to name a few.

 

  • How can I get books issued from the library?
    Books from the library are issued on the student ID card bearing a unique magnetic tape. This magnetic tape is used as an ID mark by the library.

 

  • How can I get the textbooks?
    Some of the textbooks are available in the library and the stationery shop at a modest price. Most of the textbooks are, however, available in the reference section of the library. Course material is also made available by the instructor in the main Service Center located in the AHA Auditorium building, or the respective copy centers of each faculty.

 

  • What scholarships are available and what are its eligibility criteria?

  • Will I be charged for my accommodation?
    Students are charged for their messing only. The monthly mess bill includes the actual expenses incurred for messing, electricity charges (if any), breakage (if any) and other nominal charges. An average mess bill for 30 days of a month amounts to around Rs. 3500.

 

  • How much will I have to spend per month in GIK Institute?
    Monthly expenses in GIKI apart from the mess bill include expenditure on acquiring course books, course materials (if any) and stationery charges. Due to the highly variable nature of these expenditures, it is difficult to estimate the monthly expenditure. An average figure can be estimated to fall in the range of Rs. 3500 to 4500 per month (including the Mess bill), this figure can, however, increase in the first month of the Semester subject to the course books.

 

  • What channels can I watch on the TV?
    All the popular channels like Star World, Music Asia, ESPN, Star Sports, and National Geographic can be seen. Specific channels can also be tuned on the decoder upon request.

  • Will PCs be provided in rooms?
    No, a PC will not be provided in the rooms by the institute.

 

  • What are the laundry services in GIK Institute?
    Laundry services are catered by a Laundry Shop located near the Campus Restaurant. The Laundry man also visits each hostel every three days from 8:00 PM to 10:00 PM and returns washed and ironed clothes. The charges for the service are modest and fall within Rs. 150 per month on average.

 

  • Is traveling to Islamabad or Peshawar easy?
    The Institute’s own buses go to both Islamabad and Peshawar, and come back, on the weekends. Apart from this, public transport to both Rawalpindi and Peshawar are readily available before 8:00 pm. After this time, due to restrictions on movement through the Tarbela Dam Project Barriers, transport is not available.

 

  • What about job opportunities in GIKI?
    While studying in GIK Institute, you are not allowed to keep a job.

 

  • What are the average monthly mess charges?
    The menu for the Mess is prepared by the Mess Committee, which includes students from each hostel. The charges for the mess are on non-profit basis and the students are charged for the exact expenditure on the food.

 

  • What are the expenses other than messing?
    Expenses other than mess include books, laundry, and the food that you consume apart from the mess.

 

  • How can I maintain contact with my family via telephone?
    There are five public Telephone booths in the Institute. Three of these booths are located in the Boys Hostels, one at the Café, and one at the Campus Hotel. Telephones are also available in each hostel. Calls from the outside are entertained in each hostel, but students cannot call outside GIKI using these telephones without the permission of the concerned Warden. Apart from this, one can use one's mobile telephone for the said purpose.

 

  • Is an email facility available?
    Email services are provided to each student. The email address is the registration number of the student, with “giki.edu.pk” as the domain name. Email facility is also available in the hostels through the hostels' Intranet. Internet access is available in the PC lab and the hostels alike.

 

  • Should I bring my own computer/PC with me?
    Computing facilities are available in the PC lab. However, this access is limited by time and schedule, so if you want to save time and want working freedom, you might want to bring your own PC. If, however, you want to do only routine Word Processing work and the like, the PC lab is sufficient.

 

  • What things should I bring while coming to GIKI?
    You might want to bring along bed sheets, bed covers, your favorite pillow, a pitcher for water, a glass, plates, spoons and/or forks, tea cup, table lamp, your Hi Fi stereo system, and a Personal Computer. You can bring anything to make yourself comfortable, keeping in mind however, that electrical appliances, barring a music stereo system and a PC, are not officially allowed in your room to ensure that any untoward incident does not happen.

 

  • Will I get a furnished room?
    Yes, you get a room with a bed, a mattress, a pillow, one easy chair, one study chair, one study table, one computer table, a wall cupboard and a book shelf.

 

  • Will I get a cubicle/separate room?
    The Institute provides shared accommodation to all freshmen. At the end of the first year, the students will be allotted single rooms.

 

  • Are the hostels air conditioned?
    The common rooms and the dining rooms are air conditioned. The rooms provided are not air conditioned. They, however, are centrally heated.

 

  • Are the faculties air conditioned?
    The faculties are centrally heated and air conditioned.

 

  • Is banking facility available?
    Banking facilities are available through a branch of Habib Bank of Pakistan, located in the campus.

 

  • Is locker facility available in the bank?
    Yes, lockers are available in the bank.

 

  • Can I bring my own music system?
    Yes, you can bring your own music system.

 

  • Can I bring my own Television/TV?
    No, you cannot bring a TV with you as it is not allowed in the rooms.

 

  • Is ironing facility available?
    Yes, ironing facility is available with the laundry services.

 

  • Can I get air/rail ticket easily?
    The rail and air ticket can be acquired by a reliable Travel Agent in nearby town, Topi.

 

  • Do girls get separate accommodation/hostels?
    Yes, the girls’ hostel is separately located near the Medical Center on the other side of the institute.

 

  • Which courses are offered during summer semester?
    Summer semester is basically an opportunity for students who want to repeat the courses they have failed or they have a choice to improve their grades (incase they have a D, D+ or F). As a matter of rule, any course can be offered in the summers if there are at least 10 students willing to take the said course, and there is an instructor who is willing to offer the course. You have to pay an additional Rs.6000 per credit hour (subject to revision) in the summers.

 

  • Is there any excessive academic pressure at GIKI?
    Academic pressure is always there at this level of education as the student undergoes a major shift in exposure. However, GIKI is revered by students all over Pakistan for its tough and challenging academic environment. The grading system in GIKI is rather tough, so most of the students are in for a few surprises when they come here. Added to it is the fierce competition in GIKI. But this pressure builds you up, and can be a great source of inspiration for working hard.

 

  • Will the institute help me in finding internship?
    At least 6 weeks internship in junior year is a degree requirement. The Institute helps the students in arranging for their internships.

 

  • How much will it cost to graduate from GIKI?
    Depending upon your year of admission, the total average cost of graduating from GIKI in four years, including fee and all the other expenses including a PC, amount to Rs. 1,300,000 - Rs. 1,500,000. However, you should check the graduate or undergraduate admission section for fee details.

 

  • Can I keep a pet in my room?
    No, you cannot keep a pet in your room.

 

  • Can I keep a refrigerator/fridge in my room?
    Keeping a refrigerator in rooms is not allowed unless the medical condition of the student requires so.

 

  • Can I keep a car/motorcycle/bicycle during my stay at GIKI?
    You can only keep a car on campus and that too only for making trips to outside the campus. Keeping a vehicle on campus is, however, discouraged. You have to pay a certain amount of money per semester to keep a vehicle. However, you can keep a bicycle free of charges.

 

  • Can I get my faculty transferred after I get to the institute?
    Only the top two students, at the end of the freshman year (second semester), from each faculty are eligible for change of faculty.

 

  • Are there lodging facilities for parents?
    Yes, lodging facilities are available in the Parent's lodge at the rate of 400 rupees per night (subject to revision).

 

  • Is computer access available twenty four hours a day?
    Computing facilities provided by the PC lab are available from 8:00 in the morning till 10:00 pm.

 

  • Is medical facility available twenty four hours a day?
    The medical facility is available 24 hours a day without any expense.

 

  • Is library facility available twenty four hours a day?
    The library is open from 8:00 AM till 10:00 PM in the night, with lunch and dinner breaks.

 

  • Is internet access available in the hostel rooms?
    Yes, internet is available 24/7 in the hostel rooms.
