A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed by Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute of Engineering Sciences and Technology and Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA), to support research and training activities leading to sustainable development and management of water resources in Pakistan.
The purpose of the MoU is to establish a framework agreement for cooperation between the two parties to develop and implement joint research and training activities for addressing water scarcity and quality challenges through improved water governance and efficient water resources management. They will regularly consult on matters of common interests to define areas of collaboration.
The parties have agreed to conduct cooperative activities on the basis of equality, reciprocity and mutual benefit. To this end, the parties will share information on events and activities of common interest; consult and agree on how joint activities should be financed; designate a principal representative from their respective side to strengthen and streamline coordination for programming of planning, review and evaluation meetings, and develop proposals for future activities as appropriate; encourage and facilitate the engagement and participation of relevant stakeholders (such as research organizations, universities, and other government agencies) in cooperative activities under this MoU, as mutually determined by the designated representatives of both parties and initiate and organize workshops and trainings related to the water sector issues in general, and the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province in particular.
Both parties have agreed to initiate and implement collaboration activities in planning and implementation of joint applied research projects and activities covering different aspects of water resources management, water demand and supply, water use efficiency, water and climate change, water governance, water logging and salinity, water allocation, water quality and socio-economic aspects of water; organization of advocacy and outreach events for raising public awareness about water management issues; contribute to the capacity building events, convened jointly or independently, through scholarly lectures and presentations on analysis of enduring and emerging water-related issues; coordinate creation of a “Pakistan Water Sustainability Network”; facilitate students’ visits to different project sites relevant to their areas of study / research, including hydro-power projects sites under construction; provide access to available data and information as per WAPDA’s policy to support thesis/ dissertation research of students and provide internship opportunities for GIKI’s students.
The MoU came into force immediately after its signing by Engr Shamul Mulk, President of Society for the Promotion of Engineering Sciences and Technology in Pakistan (SOPREST) and Zafar Mahmood, Chairman Wapda on August 20, 2016.
The initial duration of this MoU is established for five (5) years from the date of signing. However, the duration may be extended beyond this period if both parties agree in writing. In addition, this MoU may be amended if both parties agree in writing.
