Dr. Shaukat Hameed Khan takes charge as the Sixth Rector of GIKI

Dr Shaukat Hameed Khan has assumed charge as the sixth Rector of the Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute of Engineering Sciences and Technology on 16th June, 2008.

He brings to GIKI a rich and varied experience of research, teaching, production and planning, first in the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission where he retired as Chief Scientist in 2005, and then as Member (Science and Technology) in the restructured Planning Commission where he looked after science and technology, higher education, and industry.

He obtained his BSc and D.Phil degrees from Oxford University where he had studied as a Rhodes Scholar. He founded the laser programme in Pakistan which has now grown into the Optics Laboratories and a National Institute of Lasers and Optronics with several hundred researchers. He also helped design the laser based position monitoring system for the massive Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) detector at CERN in Geneva, which will come on line this summer. This is perhaps the only original system contributed from Pakistan to the new Large Hadron Collider of which CMS is part, and forty modules built at Optcs Labs Islamabad have been incorporated in CMS. Complete laser and optronic systems are exported regularly to several countries in Asia and Europe.

Dr Shaukat’s most recent major assignment was as Director of the Vision 2030 Project which attempted to define a preferred future for Pakistan in the 21st century from several futures which would be possible. This document drew its inspiration and inputs from a group of eminent citizens drawn from civil society, and was released in August 2007 soon after Pakistan’s 60th birthday. Dr Shaukat later addressed a small group of German parliamentarians on Vision 2030 in Berlin last October.

Dr Shaukat has been associated with GIKI since its very inception, and most recently as a member of the Board of Governors. He is a Fellow of the Pakistan Academy of Sciences.

SOPHEP organizes Beyond Education ‘07

Society for the Promotion of Higher Education in Pakistan (SOPHEP) organized Beyond Education `07 which comprised of the 1st All-Pakistan Model United Nations Conference at Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute from 23rd Nov to the 25th of Nov 2007. Beyond Education `07 also included Educational Exposition ’07 which hosted many of the top educational consultants of the country.

GIKI Model United Nations Conference ’07 (GIMUN) began on the eve of 23rd of Nov 2007 with the arrival of the participants of GIMUN ’07. The participants had dinner and then they were escorted to the welcome ceremony where they were welcomed by the Event Coordinator, Mr. Mudasir Penkar and given a brief orientation by the Secretary General, Mr. Waqar Nayyar.

On the morning of 24th Nov a Model United Nations workshop was held at the Agha Hasan Abedi auditorium by the secretary general who explained the GIMUN Rules of Procedure and the general proceedings of the GIMUN sessions. The first session for the three simulated committees of GIMUN namely Experimental Security Council, UNESCO and the WTO was held after the workshop in which the Topic areas were decided by the delegates and official discussions were started in the respective committees. After lunch on Saturday the 2nd session also got underway in which working papers were passed by the delegates and some sort of agreement was reached by the delegates on the issues of interest

After the GIMUN sessions the delegates were given a reprieve from the grueling diplomacy of the Model United Nations sessions with a Bonfire Delegate Dinner and then after that an Entertainment Night was organized by the SOPHEP team named ‘Cultural Cabaret `07’ which had the represented countries setting up stalls showcasing the cultural heritage of the countries. Some of the prominent proceedings of the night were the British delegates dressing up as the famous royal guards of the Buckingham Palace, the Israeli delegates praying in the Jewish shrine, the Mexican delegates playing a skit and the GIKIANS playing skits for the entertainment of the delegates.

After the end of the GIMUN sessions the closing ceremony was held for the 1st All-Pakistan GIKI Model United Nations Conference and Educational Expo 2007. Mrs Gracy Clark the Director of United States Educational Foundation was present at this occasion as the chief guest. In her speech she praised the SOPHEP members for organizing such a wonderful event and encouraged them to go bigger and better next time.

The overall impact of the event on the delegates and the GIKI students was great because it intertwined the interests of both as the event comprised of academic, cultural, educational and extra-curricular activities. The event provided delegates at GIMUN to further enhance their diplomatic skills, to have better communication techniques with every kind of people they had to face during the grueling Model United Nation sessions and to harden themselves for the unsympathetic world ahead of them. The Education Expo at GIKI lead to the students being more informed about their graduate education abroad and opened new horizons for them for the future.  Lastly, we appreciate the extraordinary efforts of TEAM SOPHEP for having the will to set the foundation for Model United Nations at GIKI and we wish them the best of luck in promoting the brand of GIMUN much further in years to come at GIKI and all over Pakistan.
