Faculty of Mechanical Engineering

The laboratories at the Faculty of Mechenical Engineering cater the needs of undergraduate education research, development and outside consulting. A brief description of lab facilties appear below:

Heat Engines Laboratory

Heat Engines Laboratory provides the facilities for testing the performance of internal combustion engines, and research in the areas of combustion of blended fuels, and use of alternate fuels for I.C. Engines. The Laboratory is also equipped with a boiler simulator, a gas turbine and a compressor for teaching purposes. Stack Analyzer has been used successfully for analyzing emission levels of CO, CO2, Nox etc of different industries. Along with this there is another transparent engine to provide better visualization and understanding to the students. A bomb calorimeter can be utilized to measure the energy of any fuel.

Refrigeration & Air Conditioning Laboratory

This laboratory contains different kinds of CFC and ammonia based refrigeration and air conditioning units. There are also two refrigeration trainer units which can be used for training purposes. It is also planned to develop a CFC free air conditioning unit.

Aerodynamics Laboratory

This laboratory is equipped with a supersonic wind tunnel, and three other air flow facilities. A subsonic wind tunnel equipped with a six component balance is fully operational. State of the art hot-wire anemometer and Laser Doppler.

Heat Transfer Laboratory

This laboratory has various equipment for the study of three basic heat transfer phenomena i.e., conduction, convection and radiation. There are five different scale models of heat exchangers available in these laboratories which are used in the industry. It is planned to develop a renewable energy resources laboratory in the near future.

Fluid Mechanics Laboratory

This laboratory contains training equipment to demonstrate basic principles of fluid statics, and fluid dynamics. In addition, flow visualization facilities, working models of turbines, pump testing rigs, and pipe friction apparatus are also available..

Computational Laboratory (Undergraduates)

This laboratory currently consists of Pentium-Pro based workstations with advanced graphic capability, such as dynamic rotation of 3-D solid models. This laboratory provides training facility for modeling and simulation of mechanical systems and processes. Software library includes, ANSYS , AutoCad, AMD, Pro-Engineer and DELCAM, Matlab. The software allow development of 3-D models, mechanism design, linear and non-linear analysis of structural, thermal, fluid, acoustic and other field problems. This facility has been used for conducting training workshops on computer integrated design, development and manufacturing of engineering components.

Computational Laboratory (Graduates)

This lab is only for graduate students to pursue their research work. It currently has 10 Pentium IV computers. Research facility for modeling and simulation of mechanical systems and processes is provided. Software library includes, ANSYS , AutoCad, AMD, Pro-Engineer and DELCAM.

CNC Training Laboratory

This laboratory currently consists of 8 different CNC training machines, which includes turning, milling and flexible manufacturing systems. All these machines are portable, state-of-the-art CNC systems and similar to larger industrial machines using EIA, ISO, and Fanuc-compatible programs. This laboratory in conjunction with the CAD/CAM laboratory provides a training facility for completely automated design and manufacturing methods.

Industrial NC/CNC Laboratory

Two different CNC machines are available in this laboratory, which includes lathe and machining Centre. The lab comprises of two different NC machines as well, which are wire cut and EDM. Additional equipment including CNC machines is planned in the future, which will provide hands-on training and research facility on different aspects of CAD, CAM, and CIM.

Solid Mechanics Laboratory

This teaching laboratory is equipped with instruments like torsion testing machine, creep testing machine, thin cylinder apparatus, and shearing apparatus. Strain gauges and photoclesticity techniques are used.

Mechanics Laboratory

This laboratory is provided for studying basic principles of strength of materials and dynamics. Torsional angle, loading deflection, beam measurement, centrifugal force effects, fly wheel, gyroscope, angular acceleration measurement are some of the experiments that can be conducted.

Vibrations Laboratory

This laboratory is designed to do experiments on forced and free damped vibrations, vibration analysis of beam structures, whirling of shafts and mass balancing of rotors and reciprocating machines. This recently acquired facility can be used for condition monitoring and diagnosis to meet maintenance requirements. Along with this a vibrometer present can be utilized while doing various projects.

Automobile Laboratory

This laboratory is accessed with suspension, steering and brake system service. It is also comprised of various demonstration units such as 2 and 4 stroke petrol and diesel engine, shock absorber, diesel injection pump, disk braking system, drum braking system and more. These facilitate the students in understanding.


Faculty of Mechanical Engineering provides a wide range of machines in its work shop. Students can gain experience on machines such as lathe, Shaper and Milling. Along with this, the workshop comprises of sheet shearing, bending and rolling machines. Spark welding, Electric welding and Gas welding can also be done. An Electrical Circular Saw and a Radial Arm Drilling machine are also present.

Services Offered For Industry

Stack analyzer has been successfully employed to tune industrial boilers to attain energy efficiency and analysis of flue gases for compliance against national and international emission standards for Cox, Nox, SO2 etc.

Vibrometer has been used by different industries to perform vibrational analysis on their equipment.

Precise manufacturing of mechanical components, particularly DIE and MOLD manufacturing and proto types requiring milling turning, EDM and wire cut operations, is available for industry. Our industrial CNC machines stand integrated with computerized design tool ProE, thereby enabling generation of manufacturing code and manufacturing control from the same computer  as used for designing.
