Team HammerHead Arc clinches sixth place in Shell Eco Marathon Asia 2014

Team HammerHead Arc clinches sixth place in Shell Eco-Marathon Asia 2014Team HammerHead Arc, sponsored by Toyota, represented GIK Institute in the Prototype Battery Electric Category of the competition which took place in Manila, Philippines, from February 6 to 9, 2014.   Shell Eco-Marathon is the international stage where student teams from around the globe compete with their ultra energy-efficient vehicles. Organized in America, Europe and Asia, the event hosts one of the most appreciated gatherings of young engineers who are all aspired to push the frontiers of fuel efficiency.   Led by Ahmed Zia and advised by Prof. Dr. Javed Ahmad Chattha, Team HammerHead Arc consisted of a number of inter-disciplinary students including Sherjeel Sikandar, Zain Rehman, Muhammad Salman Khalid, Ahmed Iqbal Memon, Muhammad Zohair Iqbal, Omama Tahir, Suleman B. Kazi and Hira Shaukat.   “Even the sixth rank was an achievement”, says Ahmed Iqbal, “Usually the teams from Pakistan aim to be on the scoreboard only. Of course we went for that too but when we came to know that we can do better, we gave it our best.”   Ahmed Zia particularly mentioned the healthy competitive environment, the efforts put in by the entire team and some memories of the two weeks spent in Philippines. “We took a lot of memorable photos there”, he says, “We arranged a stall bearing all those photographs and it was announced there for all the participants to come and see what Pakistani team had on display. No other team had done that and we felt proud representing our culture. Even our fellow competitors from India came to watch. We became good friends with teams from Lebanon, Qatar and Philippines. But the best part was to see GIKI, Pakistan on the scoreboard.”   Ahmed Iqbal also mentions that the greatest strength the team bears is their determination and the idea of never giving up. “There were many situations in the past few months when anyone would have given up”, he added, “but we kept going on and by the Grace of Almighty Allah, the team made it this far.”   Team achieved an efficiency of 205.6 km/kWh, falling short of first position by only 58 km/kWh. The success can be attributed to the improvements in terms of body weight, internal friction and aerodynamics. With current success, Team HammerHead is looking forward to taking things to a higher mark. For more information about Team HammerHead Arc: Click here ...

Pakistani Tech Innovator / a GIKIAN impresses Obama

A recent tweet by US President Barak Obama mentions Pakistani tech innovator Faizan Buzdar as a perfect example of why immigration reform was required in the country.   Many of you might already know Faizan Buzdar from Elixir and then from Ultimas; where he started his tech career back in the days after graduating from GIK Institute of Engineering Sciences and Technology.   The US president attached a link to a video with his tweet in which Faizan Buzdar speaks of his experiences in starting a tech company in the United States. Buzdar founded Convo.com which is a cloud based digital business collaboration workspace that enables businesses and their globally distributed teams to work faster, which is making rounds with over 5,000 customers globally.   In the video, Buzdar mentions how it took him over a year to set up the business which is “light years for a start up”. He said America needed immigration reform or it risked losing out on innovations. “Economies are going to be built on innovation,” Buzdar said in the video. The US president has made immigration reform one of his top priorities for this year and Organizing for America (OFA) has gathered 7,000 stories from undocumented immigrants to be distributed on social media. ...
