Pakistani Tech Innovator / a GIKIAN impresses Obama

A recent tweet by US President Barak Obama mentions Pakistani tech innovator Faizan Buzdar as a perfect example of why immigration reform was required in the country.   Many of you might already know Faizan Buzdar from Elixir and then from Ultimas; where he started his tech career back in the days after graduating from GIK Institute of Engineering Sciences and Technology.   The US president attached a link to a video with his tweet in which Faizan Buzdar speaks of his experiences in starting a tech company in the United States. Buzdar founded Convo.com which is a cloud based digital business collaboration workspace that enables businesses and their globally distributed teams to work faster, which is making rounds with over 5,000 customers globally.   In the video, Buzdar mentions how it took him over a year to set up the business which is “light years for a start up”. He said America needed immigration reform or it risked losing out on innovations. “Economies are going to be built on innovation,” Buzdar said in the video. The US president has made immigration reform one of his top priorities for this year and Organizing for America (OFA) has gathered 7,000 stories from undocumented immigrants to be distributed on social media. ...

GIKI-SDSU International Symposium on Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells to be held at GIKI

The GIKI-SDSU International Symposium on Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells commencing on 13 December, 2013 is a 2 day symposium aimed at harvesting low cost solar energy. The event wil also commemorate the start of collaboration between GIKI and South Dakota University for Student Internships. Professor Dr. Qiquan Qiao from South Dakota State University (SDSU), USA will be speaking about the "Graduate program at South Dakota State University and Internship Opportunities for Undergraduates in Renewable Energy in Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering". A training session on the fabrication/characterization of organic electronic and photonic devices will also be held which may help the participants to start research in organic electronics, optoelectronics, phonics, etc., and establish organic electronic device fabrication and characterization research facilities at a very low cost. This symposium will focus on recent progress, current challenges and future directions for dye sensitized solar-cell technologies. It is recognized that dye promising technologies to be competitive to traditional energy sources and other energy conversion devices in the future. However, the relatively low efficiency of energy conversion, inadequate understanding of long-term stability as well as corrosive nature of iodide-based redox couple, prevent the mass production of DSSCs in the marketplace. Recently, significant breakthroughs in energy-conversion efficiencies up to 12.3% for liquid electrolyte-based DSCs and about 12-14% for perovskite-based solid-state DSCs have led this technology to a new paradigm with commercialization not far away. The symposium aims for discussions on advanced organic and inorganic materials that have the potential to address aforementioned challenges. This symposium will provide an opportunity for participants from industry and academia to interact with some of the leading foreign and national scientists actively involved in the DSSC research. It would also provide an opportunity to young researchers, especially students, to interact with the leading scientific community, explore opportunities for higher studies in the multi-disciplinary fields of organic optoelectronics and photovoltaic research.
