Team Avrocar represents GIKI in International Design, Build, Fly Contest

The 2014 American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Design, Build, Fly (DBF) Contest sponsored by Cessna Aircraft Company and Raytheon Missile Systems was held at Cessna East Field in Wichita, Kansas from April 11-13, 2014. Out of a total of 100 entries this year, 80 teams submitted written reports to be judged based on which 71 teams attended the fly off. The 18th edition of the competition was attended by around 700 students, faculty and guests. The theme for this year was “Back Country Rough Field Bush Plane” which comprised of the following missions: ·         Taxi Mission simulated rough field operations using corrugated roofing panels ·         Flight mission 1: a ferry flight scored on the number of laps which could be flown in 4 minutes ·         Flight mission 2: a maximum load mission having 3 laps with the payload decided by the team ·         Flight mission 3: an emergency medical mission carrying two simulated patients and attendants on a timed three-lap flight. Despite strong winds for most of the weekend and a 1-hour suspension on Sunday for a passing thunderstorm, the fly off set new records. The quality of the teams, readiness to compete, and execution of the flights was outstanding. There were 209 flight attempts, of which 105 resulted in a valid flight score. 49 teams had successful flight scores and 61 completed the taxi mission. By the end of the 3 day competition, 20 teams had completed all three flight missions. The event was won by the University of Southern California. GIKI was represented by Muhammad Rafay Khan, Humbal bin Usman, Tallal Butt and Affan Hashmi of the Team Avrocar. The team managed to complete the Taxi Mission based on which we were placed in the top fifty teams. Explaining their experience, Rafay Khan said: “Our plane was based on a 2 propeller pusher design unique in the sense that the other teams had built their planes on conventional puller aircraft design. Unfortunately, due to high velocity winds which were not anticipated by us in the preparation we could not clear the further flight missions. However, the contest was a brilliant learning experience and I would request GIKI to provide us more technical and financial support in this field so we achieve better results. I am thankful to my seniors Ahmed Nabi, Farooq Kamal and Shayan Najam for all their help” ...

GIKI students attend the Coca Cola sponsored MENA Scholarship Program in Indiana University

The Coca Cola MENA Scholarship Program is a collaboration of the Coca Cola Company and the US Department of State which provides selected students from across participating countries in the Middle East, North Africa, and Near Asia the opportunity to learn about business in the context of American culture. In 2014, the selection process was highly competitive with more than 4000 students from Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Morocco, Pakistan, Palestine, and Tunisia applying for the 100 program spots. Omer Rizwan, a Junior in Electronics Engineering and Omer Ali, a Graduate student in Computer Systems Engineering were amongst the 16 students chosen to represent Pakistan in the month long program which commenced from June 23, 2014 at Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business. Students were enrolled in an accelerated curriculum including Accounting, Economics, Entrepreneurship and Finance and exposed to American entrepreneurs through special panel sessions. The highlight of the program involved the participants to be sorted into teams based on their countries which were supposed to compete in a feasibility study competition. A team represented by Omer Rizwan and presenting a design on hybrid grid tie inverter using dye sensitized solar cells went on to clinch second place in the contest. Additionally, Omer Rizwan had the honour to represent Pakistan in a special panel at the United States Chamber of Commerce in Washington DC. “Our plan was to use dye-sensitized solar panels to generate electricity. That electricity would go into an inverter which was connected to a bi-directional meter and to a battery bank in the house. When the batteries got fully charged the inverter would direct the electricity via the bi-directional meter to the grid”, explained Omer Rizwan about the proposed idea. The participants had the opportunity to meet Mr. Muhtar Kent, CEO Coca Cola Company and Mr. Richard Stengel, Under Secretary for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs, who applauded the excellent efforts done by the Pakistani students.   ...
