President SOPREST meets Turkish graduate student


  President SOPREST/BoG Engr. Shams ul Mulk, HI recently met the Turkish graduate student, Ms. Sadiye Cakmak. Ms. Cakmak is the first ever foreign graduate student who is conducting her PhD work in Faculty of Engineering Sciences under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Jameel-Un Nabi. The President lauded the efforts of FES to be able to attract foreign graduate students because of the quality and strength of their graduate program. He wished that more student exchange program should take place in near future.   Prof. Dr. Jameel-Un Nabi, Dean FES thanked the President for taking time to meet the student. He requested the President that the MoU between GIK Institute and Celal Bayar University Turkey be signed soon to be able to further strengthen the research linkages between the two universities. Foreign Scholarships Won by Three FES Batch 2009 students


FES Batch 2009 student named Noman Zia won the MSPE Excellence scholarship grant for for MSc Photonics Engineering in Ghent University, Belgium starting from academic year 2013. A second FES Batch 2009 student named Ali Raza has won the scholarship for MSc Photonics by University of  Eastern Finland, Finland starting from academic year 2013. Another third FES Batch 2009 student named Jamal has won the scholarship for MSc OpSciTech at University of  Eastern Finland , Finland under the Erasmus Mundus scholarship grant starting from Academic year 2014. ...

GIKI Starts new BS Program in Management Sciences


GIKI is setting up a new program of Bachelors in Management Sciences under the Department of Management Sciences and Humanities. The Bachelors in MS Program will focus on exploring business models from a societal and economic perspective, with particular emphasis on national, regional and international Supply Chain Management systems, and innovative entrepreneurial models in order to enable students to become pioneering icons in the corporate world. With so much attention being given to environmental concerns by world leaders and industry giants, another niche of this program will be teaching students recent developments and discussions about sustainability in a long-term business context, especially for South Asia and Pakistan specifically. Duration: The Undergraduate Program in Management Sciences is of 4-years duration, spread over 8 regular semesters, and consisting of 135 credit hours. Eligibility Requirements: Students with Intermediate (Engg, Medical, General Science, Arts) (minimum 60% marks). A-levels with at least C grade. The GIK Common Admissions Test (GCAT) will be taken for admission in BS Management Sciences at test centers. The GCAT will measure reading, writing, and mathematical skills with the objective to assess a candidate?s suitability for undergraduate study. Questions are designed to explore knowledge and skills acquired over a period of time, in order to compare candidates from different academic backgrounds. GIKI's first TEDx event to take place in AHA Auditorium on May 4th


About TEDx In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share in a TED-like experience. At TEDxGIKI and other TEDx events, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x=independently organized TED event. The TED conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized. About TEDxGIKI Diversity is the basic element that gives color to this world of ours. If you inspect anything closely, every element of its creation would be different from one another; yet, they would be bound intricately, combining the diversity into one shape, creating a marvel. TEDxGIKI is also working on the same line; mapping down the diversity that is spread around us and bringing it together on one platform; hence, diversity unified. Faculty of Electronic Engineering and PEC organized Workshop on FPGA based Digital Design


Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGA) is an integrated circuit used to implement any logical function that an ASIC could perform. Due to market demand of FPGA, two days workshop titled “FPGA based Digital Design using SPARTAN-3 Kit” was jointly organized by Faculty of Electronic Engineering (FEE) GIK Institute and Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC) on 20th- 21th April 2013. Mr. Nayyer Abbas Zaidi (Research Associate, FEE) coordinated the workshop, while the workshop was conducted by GIK Institute’s postgraduate alumni of FEE. Faculty members, undergraduate and postgraduate students attended the workshop. The participants also got hands on experience of using an FPGA kit in the workshop. GIKI won the National Finals of Microsoft's Imagine Cup Competition


A team of 3rd year students from GIKI, won the National Finals and Pakistan Crown of Microsoft's Imagine Cup  Competition, with their project, Epi-C. The names of the students are: 1. Sherjeel Sikander (FCSE) 2. Sadia Yousafzai (FCSE) 3. Ihtisham-ul-Haq (FCSW) 4. Suleman Belal Kazi (FEE) They worked under the BISMIL Lab, supervised by Dr. Suleman Mazhar (Faculty Of Computer Science). Imagine Cup is an annual competition sponsored and hosted by Microsoft . which brings together young technologists worldwide to help resolve some of the world's toughest challenges. The Imagine Cup comprises technology competitions, including Software Design. All Imagine Cup competitors create projects that address the Imagine Cup theme: "Imagine a world where technology helps solve the toughest problems". Started in 2003, it has steadily grown in size, with more than 358,000 competitors representing 183 countries and regions in 2011. This year over 70 teams from Pakistan participated in the regional finals, with 7 being selected for the national finals after evaluation of their projects by Microsoft technology specialists, Team Epi-C from GIKI was declared the national winner. Now the team will represent Pakistan in the worldwide finals. GIKI Won Innovation Award in The Innovation Summit 2013 (organized by Institute of Research Promotion)


Final semester students of Faculty of Electronic Engineering (EE) represented Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute of Engineering Sciences & Technology (GIKI) in the Innovation Summit (9 - 10 April 2013), organized by Institute of Research Promotion (IRP) in Punjab University Lahore. Five final year projects of EE were displayed and demonstrated in the event. The audience and the judges appreciated the hard work done by the students and also encouraged the novelty of work. One of GIKI’s projects, titled “Wireless Real-Time environmental monitoring of Photo-voltaic System” won Innovation Award in the INNOVATION SUMMIT. This project is rated among Top 10 out of 200 presented technologies/projects. IRP is in contact with GIKI for commercialization of this project.   The winning project’s group members include Muhammad Adnan Qaiser (2009152, EE final semester student), Muhammad Zohaib Hasan (2009206, EE final semester student), Salman Hafeez (2009243, EE final semester student) and Mahmood Sarwar (2009128, EE final semester student). The project was supervised by Prof. Dr. Khasan Karimov (Professor EE), Dr. Muhammad Faisal Khan (Assistant Professor EE) and Mr. Mahmood Khan (Research Associate EE). This project also got 2nd prize in GIKI INDUSTRIAL OPEN HOUSE and CAREERS FAIR 2013 among Faculty of Electronic Engineering’s projects.
