Pro-Rector(Academic) message for students

From the Rector: Covid-19

Dear All,

WASH YOUR HANDS FREQUENTLY WITH SOAP. KEEP YOUR DISTANCE (6 FT). DON’T SHAKE HANDS.  STAY HOME. AVOID ALL GATHERINGS. ABIDE BY GOVERNMANT INSTRUCTIONS

Like all other countries of the world, Pakistan is also facing the consequences of Covid-19, as must GIK Institute. Needless to say, our normal activities have been severely disrupted. We have been planning and implementing advocacy and prevention measures for weeks now, and I am grateful to all the students, faculty and other employees for their understanding and support. While I expect you are already aware of most of these measures, I thought I should run through some of them again.

We have been guided by the directives of the Federal and Provincial governments and the advice of health agencies like the World Health Organization (WHO). Students have vacated the hostels and have gone home. Severe restrictions have been introduced on the movement of people going in and out of the Institute and on gatherings. Retail outlets have been closed (or timings curtailed) in accordance with government instructions. Considering that thousands of people have made GIK their home, only essential personnel required for activities like medical, security, sanitation and maintenance of infrastructure are working. Some faculty members and administration officials are also working as necessary, many from home.

All visitors, including the Rector, are checked at the Gate for adverse symptoms and travel history. Many buildings have been shut down completely, since there is no activity there. Active buildings are being sanitized regularly. A number of activities, such as the Open House, international conferences and internships have been badly affected.

Importantly, the Institute medical center has been prepared for any eventuality. It has been stocked with protective gear and an isolation room has been set up which, I hope, we never get to use. The Head of the Medical Center has visited the downstream arrangements made by the government and has met – and is in constant touch with – designated  specialists in case a suspicious case appears.

STUDENTS

And, most importantly, we are looking at various options to ensure that the academic careers of students are not jeopardized. I must commend the tremendous work that the faculty has done, and is doing, in these challenging circumstances. We should be in a position to start on line courses very shortly. Additional equipment and other facilities have been acquired as necessary. Some trial runs have been done on a limited scale and the feedback from students has been very encouraging. Of course, there will be some students who will have problems such as inadequate access to the internet. We are trying to work out alternate arrangements. We will address matters like assessment and FYPs in due course.

STUDENTS ARE REQUESTED TO REGULARLY CHECK THE GIK WEBSITE FOR ANNOUNCEMENTS REGARDING THE ONLINE COURSES AND OTHER MATTERS RELATING TO THEM.

These are extremely difficult times, requiring difficult decisions. We are aware that these decisions will cause considerable discomfort and inconvenience to many. But, I am sure, you will appreciate the necessity, for your own sake and that of your friends, family and colleagues. I, therefore, expect your full support, understanding and cooperation. Together, we can beat this.

WASH YOUR HANDS FREQUENTLY WITH SOAP. KEEP YOUR DISTANCE (6 FT). DON’T SHAKE HANDS.  STAY HOME. AVOID ALL GATHERINGS. ABIDE BY GOVERNMENT INSTRUCTIONS

Stay safe.

Warm regards and best wishes.

Jehangir Bashar
