GIK introduces BS in AI – Partnered by Huawei, signs agreement with Huawei Pakistan 


GIK Institute has signed an agreement with Huawei Technologies Pakistan (Pvt.) Ltd. for collaboration in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Under the agreement, a four-year BS degree in AI, being introduced by GIK from Fall 2020, will be partnered by Huawei. The BS degree program is the first academia-enterprise partnership of its kind in the country. The partnership is a major milestone for collaboration between the Chinese tech giant Huawei; and GIK, the country’s premier institution in engineering and a leader in quality education. Under the partnership, GIK and Huawei have jointly developed the curriculum for BS AI, with particular emphasis on practical skills, for students to gain a global outlook and ample job opportunities. The partnership will also facilitate the learning, research and development of the faculty.

Both parties took part in a virtual signing ceremony to mark the launch of their AI degree program. The ceremony was attended by leading figures from both Huawei and GIK, including Mr. Farid Rahman, President GIK Board of Governors and SOPREST, Mr. Shakil Durrani, Executive Director, SOPREST, Mr. Jehangir Bashar, Rector GIK, Prof. Dr. Jameel-Un Nabi, Pro-Rector (Academic), Sardar Aminullah Khan, Pro-Rector (Admin. & Finance), Dr. Ahmar Rashid, Dean, Faculty of Computer Sciences and Engineering, Dr. Ghulam Abbas, Director, Huawei ICT Academy, Mr. Mark Meng, CEO Huawei Pakistan, and Mr. SpaceLee, Vice President, Huawei Middle East. The online event was broadcasted live on the social media channels of both Huawei Pakistan and GIK, reaching more than 20,000 viewers across both the platforms.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Farid Rehman warmly welcomed the participants and remarked that the partnership provides the next and higher level of collaboration, which will strengthen the mutual cooperation in the field of AI between the two organizations, ultimately leading to economic development in real sector and other important fields of the economy. Reciprocating the sentiment, 

Mr. Mark Meng, CEO Huawei Pakistan, shared his thoughts mentioning that Huawei will “share the best AI knowledge with GIK” and that “students will have the opportunity to be linked to the industry. Huawei & GIK have joined hands to make this initiative run successfully.”

Mr. Shakil Durrani also commended the efforts of GIK and Huawei, which will go a long way in creation of high tech human resource in Pakistan. Through this agreement, both the organizations aim to benefit from their strengths and share their expertise in the modern discipline of AI. Mr. SpaceLee, said that “AI can be used to improve all major industries, bringing forth the new future. GIK is a pioneer to be partnered with Huawei on such industry-academia cooperation for AI.” 

Mr. Jehangir Bashar shared his vision about the program stating that “Huawei has always been one of the top ICT companies in the world, GIK is recognized internationally, it would be a good fit, and thus we have the GIK BS in AI-Partnered by Huawei.” He further averred that with the GIK’s quality education combined with the hands-on experience on Huawei’s cutting edge technology and the exposure to Huawei’s platforms and services, the graduates of the “BS in AI – Partnered by Huawei” degree program shall stand out from the pack of computing graduates in the country and the world at large.

At the end, Mr. Jehangir Bashar acknowledged and appriciated the efforts of the teams from the two sides that led to the maturity of the agreement. He thanked Prof. Dr. Jameel-Un Nabi, Sardar Aminullah Khan, Dr. Ahmar Rahid, Dr. Zahid Halim, Dr. Sajid Anwar, and Dr. Raja Hashim for their contributions. He also appriciated the efforts of the working team from Huawei, including Mr. Wangxuesong, Mr. Niaz Ali Shahrukh, Ms. Fatima Sameeullah and Mr. Bilal Qasim. He also thanked SOPREST, Huawei Headquarters, Huawei Middle East Region, and the senior management of Huawei Pakistan, including the EX-CEO, Mr. Saif Chi, for their support.
